Marie Cole
Marie Cole has lived in the Hudson Valley since the early 60’s. After living
in Rhinebeck for many years, she now lives in Germantown by the river, in a converted
warehouse. Her paintings of the valley reflect her love of the area, the river,
towns and surrounding farmlands. "In the past few years, I have been very drawn
to water and weather. A river, bay, stream or pond is special at sunset or sunrise.
An approaching storm offers excitement over water. I grew up in New Jersey by
the Delaware River and spent summers at the 'Jersey Shore'. I still visit my family
in the tiny Delaware bay town called Gandy's Beach. So often, I'm either painting
the mighty Hudson River or the Delaware Bay, both equally challenging. The process
of painting is important to me. I love the paint, the viscosity, thick paint or
thin, piled up in layers or scraped down to the canvas, creating texture or smoothness.
I love the way paint creates light and shadow, yet, when you look closely, it's
still just paint."
Marie graduated from Vassar College and taught at Dutchess Community College
for several years. Her paintings are in private collections from coast to coast.
She shows locally at the Tivoli Artists Co-op, and at other galleries throughout
the east coast.
