East Meets West: Tivoli Artists' Co-op Goes to the Mountaintop
Mountaintop Gallery in Windham from January 16 to February 22. The co-op, which has Members of the Tivoli Artists Co-op will be showing a wide variety of artwork at the 35 members currently, was founded in 1993 in the Dutchess County town of Tivoli, NY after local artists experimented with a holiday show in a vacant storefront in Rhinebeck the prior winter. "Being in the co-op is a motivating force behind staying active artistically. It also gives me access to numerous opportunities for gallery exposure along with the support of an artists' community," says Dea Archbold, secretary of the group over the past few years. The co-op is self-governed by committees and by-laws. Every member pays annual dues and has an equal voice. All the artists take turns sitting at the gallery and curating the shows. Artists also volunteer for administrative assignments, such as new membership, web-site management, or acting as treasurer. "The Tivoli Artist Co-op is a wonderful community of artists," explains K. Velis Turan, a Greene County artist. "We are all looking to get our work out into the world. Some are novices, just starting out on their art path and others are very skilled artists looking for a wider audience. It's a great place to come together with people from many different walks of life, working in many a variety of mediums, all with a common goal." Another Greene County artist, Dot Chast, was honored by the Greene County Council of the Arts for her lifetime contribution to art in the upstairs Catskill gallery in 2008. "After many years of creating art," indicates Dot, "I am able to place work in almost every show at the Tivoli gallery. The fellowship and encouragement from artists at the co-op keep me painting." Each year about a dozen exhibits of varied scope and subject are mounted at the Tivoli gallery. Themes for exhibits in 2010 include two shows that also double as fundraisers for the gallery: the "Erotica" show in February and the "Food" show in June. These fun events raise money to keep annual dues as low as possible. Other themes for the 2010 season include "3", "The Dark Side", "Words and Music", and "Circus". The gallery also has exhibits of small works, landscapes and the holiday show to round out the year. The artists in the co-op include painters, sculptors, jewelers, photographers, potters, poets and performance artists. Most of the artists work in more than one medium, making each exhibit unique and unprecedented. Since its inception, the Co-op has built a reputation for excellence and enjoys recognition for its stimulating exhibits and related events. The works in the show at the Mountaintop Gallery will show that diversity. "Starting late as an artist, as a second career, the co-op has given me the boost to mature quickly," according to Barbara Walter. "I am currently working on a series of acrylic paintings about northern Greene County where I live. The works show the beauty of rural upstate New York. They also depict historic context of our small towns and hamlets while providing a window into the present." Barbara will have several landscapes from this series in the Mountaintop exhibit. Mary Untalan, a landscape painter who is showing several 5x7-inch paintings at the Mountaintop Gallery, has enjoyed the challenge of working small. "When working on such a small scale, you actually see more abstractly-simplifying the scene to more geometric patterns and grouping areas together" she noted. "I like the intimacy of a small painting." Marie Cole will have larger landscapes in the Mountaintop exhibit. "One of the series of paintings I've been working on for the past few years are large-scale landscapes of the Hudson Valley in winter, and I'm really looking forward to the snow this year. The cold weather of winter is an especially exciting time to paint in the valley. It is a challenge to see how much color can be found in the landscapes now." There will be more than just paintings at the Co-op's Mountaintop Gallery show. Dea Archbold is showing her work with traditional leaded glass and kiln fired glass painting techniques. Another artist, Kurt G. Holsapple, will be showing his wood and stone sculptural pieces, while fiber mixed media art works by K. Velis Turan are also on tap. Co-op artists in the show include Dea Archbold, Dot Chast, Marie Cole, Kurt Holsapple, Richard Lisle, Janet Jappen, Ann Moring, Susan Picard, K. Velis Turan, Mary Untalan, Karl Volk, Nancy Yu and Barbara Walter.

The artists' reception is Saturday, November 21 from 6 to 8 pm. The exhibit runs through December 20. Works by more than 20 artists will fill the gallery with art affordable in today's economy. The holiday show at the Co-op represents a departure for the gallery from its monthly showcasing of fine art by member painters, photographers and sculptors. The holiday exhibit emphasizes the perfect holiday gift. About half the artists bring out handmade items for which they have taken their creativity and applied it to fine art crafts. Other artists offer fine arts of framed photography, oils, watercolors, and monotypes in sizes to fit the holiday budget.
The gallery is made colorful by hand made bags, hats, jewelry, scarves, cards, and, new this year, hand-knit baby clothes. Unlike the usual art exhibit, new items are hung each week as purchases are taken home, so visitors are encouraged to drop in frequently. Each item is unique. Susan Kotulak is back from studying with master potters in Japan to offer fine pottery. Her pieces have a notable Asian influence with her own unmistakable natural shapes and earth colorings. Fiber artist K. Velis Turan's handmade purses and one of a kind hanging pieces add another dimension to the art buyer's choices. Long time member Janet Jappen has created a colorful array of crocheted hats and shawls using the finest wool yarns. She has also included some newly patterned silk scarves in the show as well as her famous gourd vessels. One-of-a-kind jewelry is offered by several artists including spiritualist Lara Chkhetiani. Many of the works in the show are fine art choices. Artists in the co-op feature their smaller works in the holiday show so they are affordable for everyone. For example, Marie Cole, Dot Chast and Barbara Walter, who work in acrylic or oil during the year, contribute monotypes to this show. The prints include landscape and figurative themes. Greg Martin shows photographs of the local Hudson River Valley landscape while Tarryl Gabel paints the scenes in postcard size oils. Framed photographs by Alan Reich will also be available. Frana Baruch's popular pen and inks will be on display as well. Artists in the show include Ania Aldich, Dea Archbold, Julia Aneshansley, Frana Baruch, Dot Chast, Lara Chkhetiani, Marie Cole, Jan Davis, Virginia Flynn, Tarryl Gabel, Kurt Holsapple, Janet Jappen, Susan Katz, Sue Kotulak, Richard Lisle, Greg Martin, Ann Moring, Susan Picard, Alan Reich, Roger Richards, Linda Stella, K. Tivoli Artists Co-op Press Release For Immediate Release Contact: Marie Cole (518-537-6214 or cell: 518-821-3836) Website: www.tivoliartistsco-op.com ON COMMON GROUND, an exhibit of landscape paintings by Marie Cole and Mary Untalan, will be held at the Tivoli Artists Co-op beginning Friday, September 25, 2009 and running through Sunday, October 18, 2009. The artists' reception is scheduled for Saturday, September 26, from 6-8 p.m. Both artists are well-known landscape painters of the Hudson Valley and they present familiar as well as new scenes from areas they frequent. Historic sites like Olana, Mills Mansion, Vanderbilt, Claremont and views of the Hudson River from the Rip Van Winkle Bridge are depicted, but there are also scenes from the vacation haunts of the two artists-the Jersey Shore and the Adirondacks. Marie Cole, a longtime resident in the Hudson Valley, has a studio in Germantown. Her paintings reflect her love of the area, the river, towns and surrounding farmlands. "In the past few years, I have been very drawn to water and weather. A river, bay, stream or pond is special at sunset or sunrise. An approaching storm offers excitement over water. I grew up in New Jersey by the Delaware River and spent summers at the ‘Jersey Shore.' I still visit my family in the tiny Delaware Bay town called Gandy's Beach. So often, I'm, either painting the mighty Hudson River or Delaware Bay, both equally challenging. The process of painting is important to me. I love the way paint creates light and shadow, yet, when you look closely, it's still just paint." Working with large, horizontal canvases, Cole has captured atmospheric scenes of bold vistas-the Hudson River from the bridge near her home or a golden field along the Jersey Shore. Mary Untalan has also lived and painted in the Hudson Valley for many years. Her series of small 5x7-inch paintings provided a way for her to loosen up. "When working on such a small scale, you actually see more abstractly-simplifying the scene to more geometric patterns and grouping areas together," she noted. She has also painted some long, horizontal canvases that she found challenging, "I rarely work with a 1 to 3 ratio area and haven't painted on canvas for awhile, so it required some adjustment to work in a different dimension and surface." Along with scenes from historical sites in the area, Untalan has painted vistas from the Adirondacks where there are varied lakes and mountains. "Luckily, my favorite view is from the window of our family vacation house-a lone pine stands above the bay with the silhouette of the trees behind. We've enjoyed many family outings in the area, which has given me artistic inspiration." "ON COMMON GROUND," will be shown at the Tivoli Artists Co-op from Friday, September 25 to October 18, 2009. The opening reception is Saturday, September 26th from 6-8PM. The gallery located at 60 Broadway, Tivoli, New York is open on Fridays from 5-9, Saturday from 1-9 and Sunday from 1-5. For more information contact the Tivoli Artists Co-op 845-757-2667 or Marie Cole at 518-537-6214 or 518-821-3836. ******************************************************************************************************************************
Solo Artist's Show: A Studio Visit
Not every artist has a studio. Many work at home in their beds, at the kitchen table, on the living room floor and on the front porch. Janet Jappen is one of these artists. Also included will be drawings and some of the artisan crafts and jewelry that she produces. The artist will be working in the Gallery during the month and works in progress will mature to take their place on the walls. You may visit with the artist by chance or appointment. The Tivoli Artists Co-op announces a solo show by Richard F. Lisle. The name of the show is "Artist Visions From Far & Near". The show will run from October 17th through November 9th 2008. The public is invited to meet the artist at the opening reception on Saturday, October 18th from 6:00-8:30PM. The show will feature over thirty landscapes not viewed in public before. There are many paintings of local motifs from here in the Hudson Valley, such as farms and historical sites. You will also see paintings from Richard"s travels to far away places such as Monhegan Island, Olympic National Park and Poland. All the paintings are done in oil, wet on wet. Richard is well known for his "en Plein Air" style of painting. This is a style of painting landscapes on location in the great outdoors. The paintings are known for large bush strokes and bold colors. Richard always paints a complex under painting in reverse or complementary colors. When the local color is placed over its complementary color some of it bleeds through making the colors very vibrant. If you like paintings from artists such as Winslow Homer, John Singer Sargent, and William Merritt Chase you will love Richard's work. Richard has studied under Don Stone and Mary Ann Goetz. The Hudson Valley is a logical location to inspire a new generation of landscape painting, as its physical beauty attracted many 19th century American painters known as the "Hudson River School." Artists such as Thomas Cole, Frederick Church, Sanford Gifford and Asher Durand came and lived in the area. It was common to see these artists also painting on the local hillsides. However, they did not complete their paintings outdoors. They would bring their small field studies back to the studio to complete a larger painting to sell. In the late 1800's a second wave of artists hit the Hudson valley and nearby Connecticut. These were premier artists who were influenced by the French Impressionism movement, and they were known as the "Ten". The Impressionism movement artists, were the first to complete painting on location, and the term "Painting en Plein Air" was born. Using a French easel (wooden boxes with built in stands that pack flat and assemble into full easel) Richard follow the example of the "Ten" & Hudson River School painters. They would often trudge their painting supplies up bluffs and mountains to find the scene that would inspire their paintings of the Hudson and nearby farms. The painting on the show's card by Lisle, "Panorama View From Olana", was inspired by the view from the historical home of Frederick Church. Richard says of en plein air paintings: "Only by painting on location for hours, can you truly see all the beauty it has to offer". The Tivoli Artists Solo show of Richard F. Lisle will run from October 17th through November 9th . The Co-op is located in the village of Tivoli at 60 Broadway. Gallery hours are Friday from 5-9, Saturdays from 1-9 and Sunday 1-5 or by appointment. All members of the News Press are invited to view the paintings, or interview the artist before the opening. "Double Take: Two Visions of Nature" is a new exhibit of paintings by Greenville, NY artist Barbara Walter. The theme comes from Barbara's approach to painting nature in both realism and abstract schools of art. "Some prefer art that pays homage to nature and all its glory in a direct way, others are more drawn to seeing the essence of nature in abstract works of art. I like to move between both worlds." Working mostly with acrylic paints, half the works in the show are done in a style similar to traditional oil paintings on canvas. The other half of Barbara's work in the show take advantage of modern acrylics in more liquid form, using the medium more like watercolors where a totally different effect is possible. The abstract paintings are done on plasticized paper called Yupo that permits the paints to move and flow. That movement can echo the strength and fluidity of nature, as in the work entitled "Water" which serves as the counterpoint to the traditional "Serenity" landscape painting. Barbara's paintings can also be seen at the New Century Artists Gallery in New York City, at the Greene County Council of the Arts Windham Gallery, and at the Hudson Arts Walk in October. "Natural Forces", by Susan Kotulak, demonstrates, in a myriad of ways, how the visual beauty of nature and the distinctive behavior of art materials can combine to form patterns and surfaces that are as complex and unpredictable as they are beautiful. In her Anagama (Japanese style) wood-fired art pottery, the blast of flames, ash and vapors create dramatic patterns in glaze on the surface of the pots. In her textile art, the use of natural plant materials, and seaweed thickener to carry the dye allows her to extract the essence of the beauty of nature in off-beat and sometimes unexpected ways. But whether through the wicking action of dye moving through fabric, or the flow of molten magma on the surface of her pots, it is the taming of the unpredictable, the dance with chance, that is the hallmark of Kotulak's works. She will show folding screens, architectural scale prints on fabric, and centerpieces combining pottery and textiles. The opening reception will feature Japanese style flower arrangements in her pottery. Kotulak maintains textile and pottery studios in Clermont. Her most recent solo show, "Inspired by Japan,", at Vessels Gallery, Boston, featured her ceramic vessels paired with one-of-a-kind display cloths. Eliminate plexi boxes and cheapie plastic frames. Also I have a strong aversion to the huge, ornate "Plein aire" frames. They inhibit sales, as someone would also have to make a lifestyle decision to buy it and know that the extraordinary price includes an expensive frame they will have to ditch in order to reframe it to fit in with their 20th/21st Century contemporary or Modern decor. We are selling artwork not frames. Finished gallery canvases, swiss clips, Wood strip trims, 3/4 - 1 1/2 simple, black, white, colored, silver, gold, real wood or combo therof is encouraged. Artists¹ bios: Barbara Walter has lived in upstate New York for the last 20 years. She learned her craft by attending workshops by nationally and internationally recognized artists at art centers in Sun Valley, Idaho, and Greenville, N.Y. (Hudson River Valley Art Workshops). She is a signature member of the Niagara Frontier Watercolor Society and has received funding from the New York Foundation for the Arts and the Arts Center of Albany. Walter¹s studio is located in Greenville, and her works can be viewed at her Web site www.barbarawalterfinearts.com. Barbara¹s work can be seen frequently at the Hudson Art Walk in Hudson, N.Y., the Catskill gallery the Greene County Council of the Arts, at New York City¹s New Century Artists Gallery on West 25th St. and at the Tivoli Artists Co-op Gallery. Susan Picard was born in New York City and has a B.A. in art from Smith College. She also studied painting at the Art Students¹ League of New York, at the National Academy of Design, and at the Betsy Jacaruso Watercolor Studio, as well as at Sam Adoque¹'s Landscape Workshop in Central Park. She has exhibited at the Cork Gallery at Lincoln Center, the Winthrop University Hospital in Mineola, Long Island, the Betsy Jacaruso Studio Gallery, the Tivoli Artists' Co-op, and in the National Academy of Design annual exhibitions. She received the Riva Paul Prize in 1999 from the National Academy of Design and has oil paintings and watercolors in private collections throughout the United States and in Europe. Julia Aneshansley paints because she is moved to express what she sees and feels around her. "My paintings are representational, however, their likeness is interpreted through my eyes, my emotions, my senses and personal history," she says. She also attempts to convey the mystery and beauty in all of nature and life. Cicely Perrotte has enjoyed a lifelong love affair with art. Favoring mostly watercolors, her work has been shown in many exhibits in the area including the Greene County Art Society Galleries, Columbia-Greene Community College, Woodstock Artist Association, Clermont and Olana State Historic Sites, and most recently at the Tivoli Artist Co-op, where she is a new member. Her pursuit of art has taken her far beyond the Hudson Valley. She has enjoyed workshops in Bermuda, and several times in Tuscany and Venice. Although she believes that travel is not essential to inspiration, it has certainly added variety to her repertoire. Many of her subjects reflect her roots in the Isle of Man where she was born. The island lies between England and Ireland and has strong Celtic ties. Cicely has also sold paintings through her membership in the Isle of Man Art Society. Karl J. Volk was born in 1932 in Brooklyn. Because of the Depression and lack of income, his mother needed to go to work, so Karl was sent to live with his uncles in Germany. During the war, he was bombed many times and is thus very much opposed to war .He spent some time in a very small village and some time in Aschaffenburg where he lived with his second uncle. The owner of the house was the famous Adelbert Hock, so Karl was thus early drawn to artistic endeavors. In 1947, he was able to rejoin his family in Brooklyn and meet his parents for the first time. He attended Brooklyn College where several famous artist held jobs. He was introduced to art by Mark Rothko and Kurt Seligman, among others. After his receiving his BA, he worked in an advertising agency and later received his MA at New York University, from which he graduated in 1962. After 30 years of teaching art at the elementary school level, he was finally able to devote time to his own art. He has taken many workshops in watercolor locally as well as in Maine . He continues to study with several teachers at Barrett House in Poughkeepsie. He has had a show in Tokyo and in the village where he grew up as well as in New York City galleries. Janet Jappen will be working in opaque watercolor (gouache) and will be taking inspiration from poetry by Larry Beckett whose work has also been interpreted by the music of composer and musician Tim Buckley. Ann Gibbons is a resident of Catskill, and has worked and shown professionally for more than 20 years. Originally a paper maker, she now focuses on working in collage. She has developed a technique of collage, unique to her work, which permits her great flexibility in use of the medium. Additionally, she incorporates found objects, ephemera and other detritus that she comes across to lend texture and interest. Lately, she has been using graphite and pastel to draw and for mark-making on the collages themselves to enhance their message. Further information may be obtained by contacting Ann Gibbons at 518-943-1485. Linda Stanley Linda Stanley graduated from the University of Illinois with a BFA in Painting and then went to New York and studied at the Brooklyn Museum School on a Max Beckmann Scholarship. After living in New York for several years, she married and moved to Philadelphia where she raised a family and pursued another career. During these years while not working as an artist she nevertheless studied ceramics, silk screen printing, and botanical illustration at the University of the Arts in Philadelphia and while with her husband on a Fullbright in England, studied silk screen printing. In 1993, Linda and her husband moved to Rhinebeck where they opened and ran Veranda House Bed & Breakfast for almost 10 years. After retiring and moving, she created a studio space in her home. She finally has returned to her first passion, painting and collage. She has been a member of the Tivoli Artists Co-op for four years and has participated in many shows there. She has also shown at the Millbrook Winery and had a one-person show at Montgomery Row II. She has paintings and collages in several private collections. Oil on canvas is her favorite medium as well as collages of torn paper and other materials.

Poetry and Paint Call for Entries from Members Hello, all! I am so excited to try this new approach to melding images and words! All literature sources are appropriate for this show, including the Bible, even though the title says poetry. I was going for alliteration here! I¹m looking for all new works for this show, so be inspired! Please remember that all media is welcome at the show, including sculpture, photos, etc. Next to each work, we¹ll post the source or inspiration for the piece. Please type the quotation text in Times 12 point so we can read it. Make the title of the quotation about 18-24 points and put in quotes. If it¹s a poem, and you can set up the text as it appears in the source, that would be great. The type face or font for the labels and the quotations should be the same - Times. At the bottom of the quoted text, please cite the following: Author, "title" (in quotes), where it appears (ie, a book, the Bible, anthology, etc.) The labels for the literature quotation should be typed or printed on regular plain paper, 8.5x11. It will appear next to each piece. For the labels, please attach two copies to each work submitted. The labels should have: Title Your name Medium Dimensions (framed) Price All work MUST be ready to hang with screw eyes and wire. NO jagged-edge hangers or substandard hanging devices will be accepted. Please drop off work on Sunday, July13, after 5 p.m. and Monday, July 14, in the morning and afternoon. I will begin hanging Monday, July 14, in the evening. I have a "job job" so I have to work around my daily schedule in order to be ready for the July 19 opening. I¹m revving up to send off advance notices to media who want items a month ahead, so if you could just let me know if you¹re in, I can do a preliminary press release with names and dates. Then, I¹ll follow up with a more complete press release with more details in a few weeks. The exhibit runs from July 18 to August 10 with the opening on July 19. Thanks to all! This should be a fun show to do! Best regards Ann Gibbons

LANDSCAPE SHOW
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE May 1st, 2008
TELEPHONE CONTACT: Richard Lisle, 845-473-0463 or Tivoli Artists Co-op (845) 757-COOP. The Tivoli Artists Co-op announces the 4th annual LANDSCAPE SHOW, from June 20 to July 13, 2008. The public is invited to meet many of the artists at the opening reception on Saturday, June 21st from 6:30-8PM, with a demonstration of "en Plein Air" painting by artist Richard Lisle from 5:00-6:30PM. The show will feature landscapes in all mediums by members of the Tivoli Artist Co-op. The show will be a opportunity to see work inspired by nature from around the Hudson Valley. It was common to see these artists painting on the local hillsides. However, they did not complete their paintings outdoors. They would bring their small field studies back to the studio to complete a larger painting to sell. In the late 1800,s a second wave of artists hit the Hudson valley and near by Connecticut. These were premier artists who were influenced by the French Impressionism movement, and they were known as the "Ten". The Impressionism movement artists were the first to complete painting on location, and the term "Painting en Plein Air" was born. Most of the artists participating in this show have been living in and painting the Hudson Valley for decades, and the show features attempts to capture many of the same scenes that attracted painters from the 19th & 20th Century. Richard Lisle, curator of the show, has been painting en plein air around the area for a number of years. Lisle and other members of the show believe landscape painting should be accomplished outdoors, with the wind on their backs, the sun beaming down and the scenery spread out before them! Using French easels (wooden boxes with built in stands that pack flat and assemble into full easels) or portable easels, these painters follow the example of the "Ten" and Hudson River School painters. They would often trudge their painting supplies up bluffs and mountains to find the scene that would inspire their paintings of the Hudson and near by farms. The painting on the show's card by Lisle, "Fall On The Old Farm ", was inspired by the Farmers Museum in Cooperstown NY. Richard says of en plein air paintings: "Only by painting on location for hours, can you truly see all the beauty it has to offer". Nancy Yu, another Plein Air Landscape painter says she is drawn to the constantly changing light, reflections and colors. She believes her oil paintings capture a feeling of life that can only be done by painting on location.
Another artist familiar with the area is Dot Chast who has been a member for many years. Her paintings often like to focus in on a smaller subject in nature, such as a large tree or stone wall. Other Artists in the show are Julia Aneshansley, Frana K. Baruch, Laura Chkhetiani, Bonnie Fisher, Tarryl Gabel, Jennifer Harris, Janet Jappen, Susan Katz, Pat Klein, Greg Martin, Rosemary Molloy, Ann Moring, Cicely Perrotte, Susan Picard, Mary Untalan, Karl Volk, Barbara Walter, John Winkler and David Wiseltier. During the opening, June 21st, curator Richard Lisle will give a en Plein Air demonstration starting at 5:00PM outside the Tivoli Co-op on Broadway. The painting Richard completes will be raffled off. The Tivoli Artists Landscape Show will run from June 20th to July 13th. The Co-op is located in the village of Tivoli at 60 Broadway. Gallery hours are Friday from 5-9, Saturdays from 1-9 and Sunday 1-5 or by appointment. For more information, call the gallery at 845-757-COOP ( 2667) or curator Richard Lisle, 845-473-0463 *****************************************************************************************************************************

H20 SHOW BEGINS APRIL 25
Telephone contact: Julia Aneshansley 518- 537-3200 Imaging/computer contact: Barbara Walter barbaralwalter@aol.com
The members of the Tivoli Artists Co-op will present a new show titled "H2O" at their gallery on Broadway in Tivoli, NY. The show runs from Friday, April 25 through Sunday, May 18. The artists will be at the opening reception on Saturday April 26 from 6-9 PM to meet the public and talk about their art. The "H20" theme is the brainchild of member artist Julia Aneshansley, who has joined with Karl Volk and Barbara Walter to organize the exhibit. Much of the work in the show is inspired by the many waterfalls, streams, and lakes in the mid-Hudson River region. Soothing streams, cuddly clouds, peaceful ponds are all there to ponder, as are some more abstract artistic representations of water in nature. Normally a painter of animals, Julia Aneshansley's work in the exhibit captures the grandeur and power of ocean swells. Karl Volk exhibits widely and is known for his imaginative print, painting and drawing ensembles. Barbara Walter specializes in both encaustic and acrylic. For this show, her works in acrylic capture eddies and flows of streams and ocean. Other members of the co-op bring diversity to the exhibit, with sculpture, glass works, pottery and collage. Many of the artists in the Tivoli Co-op are from the Hudson River Valley area and naturally follow the long tradition of landscape painting represented famously by Thomas Cole and Fredrick Church. Church's home "Olana" in Hudson, NY and the nearby Thomas Cole House in Catskill are not far from the Tivoli gallery and can be toured year round. Artists in the show include Tarryl Gabel, Karl Volk, Julia Aneshansley, Dea Archbold, John Winkler, Mary Untalan and Barbara Walter. *******************************************************
Re: HARRIS & BENNETT: RECENT WORKSShow Dates: March 28 - April 20, 2008Opening Reception: Saturday, March 29, 6 - 9 PMGallery Hours: Fridays 5 - 9, Saturdays 1 - 9, Sundays 1 - 5, and by appointmentContact: Jennifer Harris and Mark Bennett - (845) 757-2744 - jenha@frontiernet.net HARRIS & BENNETT: RECENT WORKS From March 28 to April 20, the Tivoli Artists Co-op Gallery at 60 Broadway in Tivoli, NY, will be transformed into a theatrical installation of sculpture exploring structure and form, color and light, inner spaces and outer reflections. In Harris & Bennett: Recent Works, artists Jennifer Harris and Mark Bennett create a series of environments bathed in light and shadow. Bennett's work is structure revealing itself-its inner workings and light and color. Harris's work is structure removed-all shadow, shape, and texture. Harris creates abstract and figurative forms, exploring shape, surface texture, and shadow in a variety of media. Smoke, a series of ethereal cast-glass forms, abstracts the eddies and swirls of smoke. Shrubbery is a grouping of whimsical topiary-like forms, their diaphanous fabric surfaces all bumpy and prickly. Carved figurative panels in wood gilded with aluminum leaf and encaustic reveal archetypal compositions, the groupings of simplified forms on reduced backgrounds sometimes chaotic, sometimes choreographed. A series of silhouette figures, also carved wood with encaustic surfaces, are set out from the wall on pins, like scientific specimens. The figures are caught in motion, midair, interacting in ambiguous ways.
Bennett's large-scale constructions are made of twisted, bent, and cut wood, oozing light and color through their crevices and fissures. His interests lie in inner, hidden spaces and the interactions between structure and form. Fish Trap is a complex organic shape planked with bent wood, reminiscent of a bursting seed pod revealing its mysterious contents. Stack is a fissured and cracked column-either a classical form or an industrial smokestack-built up from polished hemlock staves not quite enclosing an inner space of color and light. Vessel is a twisting form of a boat or water animal, framed in bent oak and planked with cedar, its interior structures exposed.
Harris & Bennett: Recent Works will be showing from March 28 to April 20, 2008, at the Tivoli Artists Co-op Gallery, 60 Broadway, Tivoli, NY. The gallery is open Fridays from 5 to 9 PM, Saturdays from 1 to 9 PM, and Sundays from 1 to 5 PM, and by appointment. The Tivoli Artists Co-op will present an Erotica art exhibit during the month of February, its eighth such event. The show begins on February 1st, with the opening reception from 6-9 pm on Saturday, February 2. The exhibit features art of a sensual and erotic nature approached with humor and good taste but also with the artists' freedom to conceive of works that fall within the "adults only" signature event.
The opening reception, where wine and erotic foods will be offered, includes a special performance by modern dancer Jennifer Hunderfund. A dancer since the age of 5, Jennifer has studied modern and folk dance. Her particular inspiration for this special evening is the philosophy of Isadora Duncan who danced to the rhythm of her soul. Past receptions have attracted overflow audiences.
Artworks in the exhibit are by member artists as well as invited guests. The works represents the artists' concepts of love, including homage to the human body, and of loving relationships. Among the twenty artists included in the show are co-op members Dea Archbold, Susan Cara, Lara Chkhetiani, Susan Katz and Barbara Walter.
Susan Katz, a photographer, submitted eye-catching black and white photographs of burlesque performers. Helen Sacco, a former coop member and previous contributor to the Erotica shows, has produced drawings of embracing couples that leave no doubt of their feelings for each other. Artist Barbara Walter is entering her first Erotica show. Two of her latest encaustic works (charcoal figure drawings under wax and oil) were created especially for the show. "The well formed male body radiates sensual beauty, as seen time and again in the works of artists from the Renaissance forward," says Barbara. Dea Archbold also created new works for the show; her works in watercolor pencil on canvas board convey both an exotic and spiritual quality The Tivoli Artist Co-op gallery is a beautiful space at 60 Broadway in Tivoli, NY, 12583. The co-op is comprised of about forty artists who put on 11 shows per year from February to December. This will be the 8th annual Erotica show. Contact: barbaralwalter@aol.com The Tivoli Artists’ Co-op Gallery features a new collection of works by its members in mixed media opening October 19 and running through November 12. Unlike the typical gallery show with oils and watercolors, this Tivoli show will feature works in encaustic, collage, fiber and other modern mediums. The variety and quality of the work is a testament to the strength and diversity of the thirty-five artists in the 15 year old coop in the Hudson River town of Tivoli, NY. Works in encaustic, or hot wax painting, are featured in the exhibit, with artist Barbara Walter of Greenville, NY, demonstrating the use of encaustic technique before the artists’ reception Saturday, October 20 from 6 to 8 p.m. First used by the ancient Greeks, this technique was used in Egyptian mummy portraits around 100- 300 AD. The most notable American artist to popularize the medium was Jasper Johns in the 1950s. Encaustic painting involves using heated beeswax. The hot wax is generally applied to a wood surface in multiple layers to create depth and permit the surface to be sculpted. Tools and heated brushes can be used to shape the work when molten, or heated metal tools can manipulate the wax once it has cooled. Pigments, such as oil paints, can be added to the wax, and the wax can also be used to bind oil or pastels or collage material into the work. Barbara has been working with encaustics for several years, most recently doing figurative work. "The medium adds a third dimension to a painting which can’t be duplicated in oils or acrylics." The exhibit also features Anagama wood firings and soda firings by textile artist and potter Susan Kotulak. Susan capitalizes on how the natural properties of material reveal and enhance surface design, imagery and textures. Her most recent solo show featured pairings of individual pottery and textile works, with the design of one inspired by the other, as influenced by a recent pilgrimage to Japan. Pieces in the current show include works fired for 100 hours using 8 cords of wood and reaching the highest temperature of any kiln in an Anagama or Japanese wood kiln 65 feet long. The high temperatures and melted ash deposits account for the dramatic surfaces and coloration of Susan’s pieces. Works in collage by Ann Gibbons, Linda Stanley and Karl Volk will be included in the show. Other artists in the show include Frana Baruch, Susan Cara, Dot Chast, Marie Cole, Frank Duncan, Donna Gould, Lana Hirsch, Janet Jappen and Rochelle Redfield. In addition to encaustic, pottery and collage, there will works in fiber, print, sculpture, and other mixed media.

The Small Works Show begins July 27.
Small works!
4th annual small works and fine handcrafts show by the artists and artisans of the TIvoli Artists Co-op
opening July 27th
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Small works!
Small does work! How well it works will be evident at the 4th annual small works and fine crafts show at the Tivoli Artists’ Co-op at 60 Broadway in Tivoli, NY.
The show opens on Friday, July 27th with an opening artists’ reception on Saturday, July 28th from 6-8 pm. The show runs through Sunday, August 19th.
The small works will consist of paintings, photographs, pottery, collage, and fine handcrafts of hand painted plates, handbags, hand painted silk scarves, jewelry and buttons. Participating in the show will be Mary Untalan and Marie Cole, well known as painters of Hudson Valley landscapes. Lana Hirsch will offer a collection of 20 small teapots along with a variety of vases and ceramic buttons. Janet Jappen will have her shibori scarves and a collection of Egyptian Coil and crocheted silver jewelry. Several new artists and photographers will be exhibiting along with familiars such as Dot Chast, Karl Volk and Susan Kotulak.
Rule of thumb for the small works show is that the work should be able to fit into a small shopping bag, so the works will start with buttons and miniatures and run up to 12”x 18” at the largest. They fit in between windows, on shelves and in the odd corners. This is the place to find something to fill that niche.
Gallery Hours are: Friday 5-9pm, Saturday 1-9pm and Sunday from 1-5pm. The gallery can be reached at (845) 757–2667 during gallery hours. Check out our website for directions and other information: tivoliartistsco-op.com
